Community Theatre Coalition –
To Recognize and Honour Excellence in Community Theatre -
The Community Theatre Coalition grew out of an idea that an awards' show that recognized outstanding achievement in community theatre as judged by its peers, would be a fun way to wrap up a season of community theatre. Everyone enjoyed going to a good party that was slightly high class - you could dress up in evening wear - rent a limo and mingle with other community theatre people. Paul Eddy & Mike Busswood went around to the local groups, pitching the idea of a year end awards show, the rules and voting procedures were based on the Tony awards.
The idea was exciting and soon the CTC had twelve member groups, each providing
a nominating rep - this was & still is the most important job toward making the
CTC a success. We always recognized the huge time commitment that was required
from the reps, because without dedicated reps, there is no CTC.
With the advent of technology, more crowding on highways and a busier pace of life it has become more and more difficult to secure reps who can follow through with their commitment to see all shows in the season. It is also difficult for club board members to follow through as well. In short EVERYONE is busy.
This year we lost four of our 9 reps. Over the past three years it has become apparent to the board of Governors that a change in the structure of the CTC needs to happen.
As mentioned earlier without the dedication of the club reps who must see all the shows the CTC can’t exist. This year five of our board of governors are stepping down and only one person has stepped forward. After much discussion about where to go to next – given our original mandate to have a year end celebration party the Board of governors made this unanimous motion:
MOTION: That after 16 years the board will dissolve the CTC after the
2008 Gala Night. To be announced at the 2008 Nomination Night.
The intent of this motion is to allow time to re-look at the structure of the CTC. For the 2008-2009 season there will be no CTC awards gala. After that timeframe those wishing to review and possibly restructure the group may do so. The existing board will not be involved with the restructuring but may serve as a resource.
The CTC has always been about excellence in Community Theatre. The purpose of tonight’s nomination announcements is to celebrate the excellence of our peers, to mingle with friends we haven’t seen for awhile
We have secured one of our founding members, Mike Busswood as our Gala Night MC. Along with him is Ben Odberg. Music will be provided by Penguin Mobile Sound. We also have a special feature for this year’s program - SLT’s very own Chris Gursche has agreed to perform a short comedy routine.
The final Gala Awards will take place on September 6, 2008 at the Fort Langley Golf Club. The board of governors wishes to announce at this time a reduction in the price of the tickets from $45 to $40.
